Cooperation of universities

Humanities scholars from Russia and the Emirates unite

The development of the International Russian-Arab Center, the creation of a gymnasium offering advanced language studies, and cooperation with the Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities in the UAE were just some of the issues discussed at a meeting between the leadership of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSHU) and a delegation from the UAE Embassy.

On November 25, the leadership of the RSUH met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to the Russian Federation at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSHU) to discuss humanitarian, scientific, and educational cooperation.

"The potential concentrated at our University in the social sciences and humanities is among the most important in Russia. Therefore, RSUH has been tasked with the strategically important task of refining the social sciences and humanities paradigm in the country," noted Acting Rector of RSUH Andrey Loginov. He added that RSUH offers the largest number of social sciences and humanities disciplines in Russia, including 45 foreign languages. Today, several hundred students are studying Arabic at the university, and the University's future plans include expanding its study of the countries of the Greater South.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to the Russian Federation, Mr. Mohammad Ahmad S.E. Aljaber, stated that RSUH and Emirati universities have significant opportunities for student exchanges, expanding cooperation in higher education, implementing joint research projects, and mutual recognition of educational programs.

A. Loginov announced that RSUH plans to open an International Russian-Arab Center in December, where professors, associate professors, students, and postgraduate students will be brought together to study the Arab world and develop Russian-Arab contacts. The UAE guests responded enthusiastically to this initiative and offered comprehensive assistance. For example, the university proposed opening auditoriums dedicated to the United Arab Emirates, where diplomatic meetings and lectures for students could be held in an authentic setting. Moreover, Andrey Loginov noted that RSUH believes it is essential to emphasize the study of foreign languages. However, it is important to understand that creating two, five, or ten Arabic-language schools or two or three Arabic-language classes is not enough. Education must be consistent and continuous, so that students who receive such an education can continue their studies in the United Arab Emirates and any other Arab country. This also applies to all languages studied at RSUH.

"Today, RSUH wants to ensure this seamlessness of education. I believe we will develop proposals in this area for implementation in educational programs nationwide," the acting rector of RSUH shared his plans for methodological developments at the Russian State University for the Humanities.

As one step toward seamless education, a full-fledged gymnasium is planned to be established at RSUH in the near future, with the educational foundation of Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as one European or Asian language. Thus, starting in fifth grade, children will be able to fully master languages, and upon entering higher education, they will easily add one or two more European and Asian languages to their repertoire.

The head of the Arab delegation took the opportunity to thank the RSUH faculty for their professionalism:

"At RSUH, many students from the UAE study Russian and international relations, and all of our students feel comfortable and positive within the university," said Mr. Mohammad Ahmad S. E. Aljaber.

The Acting Rector of RSUH, in turn, explained that international students from the UAE at RSUH are taught those things that constitute the essence of the Russian national spirit: Russian language, literature, and Russian history. It is important for RSUH that international students develop an understanding of the Russian state, its views, and its positions, especially in the current international situation.

During the talks, the Ambassador also proposed establishing close cooperation between RSUH and the Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities in the UAE, as he believed the two universities share a "common core"—they are both engaged in the humanities and are developing in the same direction. The proposal was approved by the Russian side. The Arab Humanities University also currently offers student exchange programs, and the Ambassador took the opportunity to invite Russian students from Moscow, Tatarstan, and other regions to study in the UAE. They wish to gain an understanding of Arab culture and improve their Arabic communication skills. Mr. Mohammad Ahmad S.E. Aljaber also noted that several diplomats from the UAE Embassy would also like to pursue master's studies at RSUH and inquired about the possibility of a grant from RSUH for this purpose, to which he received an unconditional positive response from the University's leadership. Thus, by the end of the meeting, at least three areas for developing cooperation with the UAE were identified:

Creation and development of an International Russian-Arab Center;

Creation of a full-fledged gymnasium with in-depth study of languages, including Arabic;

Collaboration with the Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities in the UAE.

This offers ample scope for fruitful collaboration to achieve the main goal—the introduction of Arabic into Russian education, not only in higher education but also in schools.

Following the talks, Acting Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities Andrey Loginov gave the guests from the United Arab Emirates a tour of the historic 1905 building of Shanyavsky University, which now houses the Russian State University for the Humanities, and the unique complex of the branch of the A.S. Pushkin Museum. The parties then exchanged commemorative gifts, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to the Russian Federation signed his best wishes in the RSUH Book of Distinguished Guests.

The event was organized by the RSUH Department of International Cooperation.
